What to Expect with Hypnosis...

Your First Session

Before we meet

By its nature, hypnosis is very personal. After all, you want to be comfortable with a hypnotherapist if you’ll be sharing thoughts, feelings, and experiences you may never even have shared with anyone else before.

Also, you may be new to hypnosis. And so, it’s important to clear away common misconceptions because movies and stage shows are, quite possibly, a person’s only frame of reference.

(While I believe there’s a place for mirth and fun with the unconscious mind, when it comes to making positive life changes, Hollywood and Las Vegas offer us few insights into making meaningful changes at the unconscious level.)

In addition to asking you why you are interested in using hypnosis (and why at this time in your life), I’ll also make sure to:


  1. Explain what hypnosis is using examples from everyday life that any adult can relate to
  2. Debunk various myths so there’s no place for fear in the hypnotherapy process
  3. Set expectations so it’s clear once you are hypnotized, that you were, indeed, hypnotized
  4. Identify any medical or psychological conditions that may require a professional referral before sessions can begin 


Also, we’ll go into some depth about how:


  • Your outlook and level of commitment affect your outcomes with hypnosis and how you can shift them
  • Your conscious and unconscious minds differ so you can start seeing your issue in a new light
  • Your emotions and unconscious beliefs are fueling the repeating patterns you want to change
  • You can transform your emotions and beliefs in record time so your habit changes can stick 
  • You can describe what life-changing results look like to you and track your progress every step of the way
  • Your program of sessions will unfold and what you can look forward to accomplishing in each session (and why it works)

Use the 4Qs to Aim Hypnosis in the Right Direction for You

The 4Qs helps you to identity what you want more and what you want less of in your life in the quadrants of: Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, Physical.  The diagram below is taken from my book, Change the One Belief: The Magic of Mental and Emotional Release®

As you do this, naturally, you will find yourself taking inventory of yourself as a whole person. This will give us the holistic focus we need so you can experience the deep breakthroughs that support your enduring lifestyle changes.

The more tangibly you can define the results you want from hypnosis; the easier it will be for your unconscious mind to manifest them… easily… with less effort… sooner.

Your 4Qs submission will serve as your results tracking sheet. It’s in your words and your words only. We will review it at the start and finish of every session so you always appreciate your progress on matters big and small, at all times. By submitting your 4Qs before Session 1, it documents where you were at when we got started together.


Use the 5Ws & 1H to Enhance Your 4Qs

The 5Ws are: who, what, where, when and why. The 1H is how. Let’s use overeating as an example.

  • Who could include people who are present when you engage in the habit (e.g., family gatherings)
  • What could be the act of the habit itself like overeating when already full
  • Where might be situational such as overeating while watching TV
  • When may be overeating after 7pm
  • Why could address motivations along the lines of feeling rewarded or preventing interest from the opposite sex. Why is something you can approach from many angles
  • How can speak to the emotions that create the drive to overeat


Also, when you come to Session 1, you will have already completed the routine paperwork. For example, if you are on prescription medications or have health issues which can affect how you come at the hypnosis process, they are worth knowing about. It also has a list of major life events you can check off so we are aware of other considerations that could be in play. In this regard, things like coming off of a divorce or the death of a loved one can have an influence. There are also some questions around spirituality so I can use your preferred words during hypnosis.




When we meet

(At this time, we meet over Zoom. When full normal returns, I will reopen the office. Fyi, I’ve been paying rent there since July 2016 as I love the area and want to return at the soonest feasible time.

Your results over Zoom will be the same as in-office. Why? Watching a screen is hypnotic to begin with. So long as no one is disrupting you from focusing on our work, you will do fine. We might even be able to test for effectiveness in ways we could not in-office.)

Before Hypnosis Begins

Our sessions do not have a fixed length. They can vary from one hour to two and a half. How come? Because tick-tock of the clock getting in the way of your results is unacceptable.

To kick off Session 1, I will underline a handful of key words and phrases in your 4Qs document and ask you, “When these items get successfully addressed, do you think, everything else on the page will sort itself out, get fixed, or cease to be important?” Once you can say “Yes,” you’ve not only described what success looks like to you, you’ve declared your priorities as well. 


As mentioned above, at the start and finish of each session you will mark up your 4Qs tracking sheet using color-coded highlighting so you appreciate your progress during our sessions as well as from session to session.


Next, I will lay out the plan for our session. It will be completely clear to you how what we are doing in this particular session aligns with what we discussed during our Get Acquainted Call. If your 4Qs tracking sheet and experiences thus far call for a change in approach or some other accommodation, I will make whatever adjustments are needed to keep everything tailored to your needs.



Time for Energy-Assisted Hypnosis

With our session plan established, we will utilize a personalized combination of Hypnosis, Conversational Hypnosis, NLP, Mental and Emotional Release®, Hawaiian energy work (Huna) and possibly Distance Reiki to achieve the results you are seeking in the most expedited fashion that supports your long-term results. All other things being equal, energy tends to help smooth out speed bumps along the way so you attain your results sooner. 

This blend of modalities has real-time testing built-in so you know you are making changes before you even get up from your chair.  Now, the need for recordings and you having to carve out extra time to listen to them goes away. Under certain circumstances, we might still make a recording however, repeated listening to recordings is meant to overcome resistance to the change you seek. Why not remove the resistance in-session and save your personal time for other things?

Also, unlike traditional hypnosis sessions, the process will be much more two-way and interactive. In essence, it will be a series of short-duration “thought experiments” where you have your eyes closed for some interludes and open for others. 

Either way, you will be going to different times and places and applying resources all of your own making to those memories and scenarios. I won’t know your memories nor will I be privy to the lines of thought you applied that helped you to change. Let’s call them “learnings.”

Once you’ve applied your own learnings at the unconscious level, there’s no way you can unlearn them. This helps secure changes that actually stick.   

As we go, you will continually calibrate to confirm your new insights, shifts, emotional releases, belief changes, preferences, capacities, and capabilities to live differently have taken root.
